Crane Hire vs Contract Lifting — What's the Difference?
Understanding the difference between crane hire and contract lifting is important when planning your lifting operation.
Crane Hire
Under standard CPA Crane Hire conditions, Adco supplies the crane and a qualified operator. The hirer is responsible for planning and managing the lifting operation.
The hirer is required to:
✓ Carry out all operations in compliance with BS7121
✓ Provide third-party liability insurance and insurance for hired-in plant, or alternatively, pay a 25% damage waiver
✓ Plan and perform the lift using a safe system of work
✓ Verify the credentials and certifications of the crane hire personnel
✓ Confirm the qualifications and competencies of all involved parties
The crane owner is responsible for:
✓ Supplying a crane that is properly maintained, tested, and certified
✓ Providing a qualified and competent crane operator
Contract Lifting
Under CPA Contract Lifting conditions, Adco takes responsibility for the full lifting operation including planning, supervision, crane operation and lifting management.
Crane Owner Responsibilities:
✓ Provide a qualified Appointed Person
✓ Plan the lift and implement a safe system of work, including preparation of the Method Statement
✓ Manage and control all elements of the lifting operation
✓ Ensure appropriate ground conditions (applicable to private customers only)
Hirer Responsibilities:
✓ Confirm that the crane owner is to provide the Appointed Person
✓ Grant site access for a comprehensive survey to support the Risk Assessment and Method Statement
✓ Provide accurate details of the load to be lifted
✓ Inform the crane owner of any potential site-specific hazards that may not be immediately visible
Still not sure? Our team can advise on the most suitable lifting solution based on your project requirements, site conditions and operational responsibilities.
Lift Planning
Every Lift Starts With A Plan
Our lift planning support helps clients arrange safe, efficient crane hire and contract lifting for complex projects across the UK. Efficient lifting operations start before the crane gets to site. At Adco, our operational and technical teams work with your team early on to put together a clear, practical lift plan covering the key risks, exclusion zones, access requirements and the most suitable equipment for the job.
By planning each lift properly from the start, we help keep projects safe, efficient and on programme. It is this straightforward, reliable approach that gives our clients confidence and brings them back to Adco time and again.
Working Towards a Greener Future
Environmental Responsibility
At Adco Crane Hire, we recognise the responsibility businesses in our industry have to reduce their environmental impact. We are actively working to improve the sustainability of our operations — from reviewing fuel consumption and fleet efficiency through to reducing waste and supporting greener practices on site. This is a journey we are committed to, and we are proud to be taking meaningful steps in the right direction.

Contract lifting is the safest, most compliant option for complex or high-risk operations. Frequently Asked Questions
FAQs
Common questions about crane hire in the UK. Can't find your answer? Call our team or request a quote.
What is crane hire?
Crane hire is the provision of a crane and qualified operator to carry out lifting works under the customer's direction. The customer is responsible for planning the lift, preparing the method statement and risk assessment, appointing a competent person, and ensuring the lift is carried out safely in accordance with BS7121.
What is the difference between crane hire and contract lifting?
With standard crane hire (under CPA Hire Conditions), the client retains responsibility for the lifting operation. Under Contract Lifting (CPA Contract Lifting Conditions), Adco assumes full responsibility for the lift — including lift planning, the operator, the crane and all risk management. Contract lifting is recommended for complex or high-risk operations where you want a fully managed, compliant solution.
Do you offer crane hire across the whole of the UK?
Yes. Adco Crane Hire provides crane hire services across the UK, including Scotland, Northern England, the Midlands, East Anglia, the South of England and Wales. We have the fleet and logistics capability to mobilise to most UK locations quickly, and our team will provide a competitive quote for crane hire wherever your project is based.
What sectors do you provide crane hire for?
Adco Crane Hire serves clients across a broad range of sectors including construction, civil engineering, oil and gas, renewable energy, nuclear, petrochemical, manufacturing, heritage and listed buildings, retail fit-out, and infrastructure. Our experience across diverse industries means we understand the specific requirements and challenges of each sector.
What types of crane do you offer for hire?
Adco Crane Hire operates a diverse, modern fleet including pick-and-carry, mobile, strut and crawler cranes. With a wide range of lifting capacities available, we can support everything from restricted-access lifting through to larger, more complex heavy-lift requirements.
Our team will assess your project and recommend the most suitable crane for the job, ensuring the right equipment is supplied for the lift, site conditions and access requirements.
Are your crane operators fully qualified?
Yes. All Adco crane operators hold current CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) certification, which is the industry standard for crane operators in the UK. Our operators undergo regular refresher training and are fully compliant with HSE requirements. We never supply unqualified personnel.
How do I get a crane hire quote?
Getting a crane hire quote from Adco is straightforward. Contact us by phone or complete our online enquiry form with details of your project location, the load to be lifted, available access and your required dates. Our team will respond quickly with a competitive quote and, where needed, arrange a site visit to produce a detailed lift plan.
Is insurance required for crane hire?
Yes, adequate insurance is a requirement for all crane hire operations. Adco carries comprehensive public liability and employer's liability insurance. Under contract lifting arrangements, our insurance covers the lifting operation in full. We recommend all clients confirm their own site insurance arrangements are in place prior to commencement of lifting works.
